Short answer: online Teen Patti played for money is banned across India. Playing Teen Patti for fun, with free chips or with family at home and no money involved, is not what the law is aimed at. Our Teen Patti guide covers the rules and hand rankings for that kind of play.
This page is general information, not legal advice. Laws and court rulings change. If you are unsure about your own situation, speak to a lawyer.
The Online Gaming Act, 2025
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 received Presidential assent on 22 August 2025. It divides online games into e-sports, online social games and online money games, and treats them very differently.
- Online money games are banned. Any online game where you deposit money or stakes expecting to win money back is banned, whether it is based on skill, chance or both.
- Advertising them is banned. Promoting online money games, including through ads and endorsements, is an offence.
- Payments are blocked. Banks and payment services may not process payments for online money games.
- Social games and e-sports are allowed. The Act supports online games played for entertainment without money stakes.
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026 took effect on 1 May 2026 and set up the Online Gaming Authority of India to classify games and oversee platforms.
Where Teen Patti fits
| How you play | Status under the Act |
|---|---|
| Online, depositing money to win money | Banned online money game |
| Online, with free chips and no cash value | Online social game, not the target of the ban |
| At home with family, no money | Not an online game, outside the Act |
| At home for money | Covered by state gambling laws, which vary |
The skill-versus-chance debate that once decided many court cases does not help money apps any more. The 2025 Act bans online money games whether they are games of skill or chance.
What it means for players
The Act treats players as victims rather than offenders. Its penalties are aimed at operators, promoters and payment facilitators. Even so:
- Money you put into a banned app may be hard or impossible to get back.
- Payment routes for such apps are cut off, so deposits and withdrawals can fail or be frozen.
- Apps still offering money play are operating against the law, which puts your money and data at risk.
That is why OMSI does not explain how to claim bonuses, make deposits or withdraw, and does not recommend adding money to any Teen Patti app. Our Teen Patti Master guide explains what the app's advertised bonus and withdrawal offers really are, and why payouts get stuck.
Can you still win real cash at Teen Patti?
Only offline, at a licensed casino. Land-based casinos in Goa and Sikkim hold state licences and run live Teen Patti tables where adults play for real money, under the casino's own entry age and ID rules.
Online, any Teen Patti app that promises a real cash win is offering an online money game, which the 2025 Act bans. That has practical effects even before any legal risk:
- Withdrawals from these apps often show as "pending" for days, or fail when a payment route is shut down.
- "Real cash" bonuses usually come with conditions that stop you from ever withdrawing them.
- Groups that sell "winning tricks" or prediction tips for real money play are scams. The cards are dealt by the app, and nobody outside it can predict them.
If an app or agent asks for a deposit, a "withdrawal fee" or your UPI PIN, stop and read our guide to Teen Patti scams and fake apps.
State laws
Several states had their own bans on gambling or online gaming before the central Act, including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Sikkim, Nagaland and Meghalaya. Home games played for money are governed by state gambling laws, which differ from state to state.
Court challenges
Challenges to the Act were transferred to the Supreme Court of India in September 2025 and are still being heard. The ban applies unless the Court rules otherwise. We will update this page if that changes.
